Climate change impacts
It takes only 91 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Barbadian will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, April 1st (91 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Barbados Day."
According to the Barbados Town and Country Planning Society, “the major issues of climate change are sea level rise and the likelihood of more intense weather systems and periods of drought. Sea water rise is seen as the greatest potential impact, especially during intense storm swell conditions. At risk are sections of central Bridgetown and some sections of coastline including Holetown and numerous beachfront hotels, apartments, houses and some major installations. Weather systems are likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas and through 'washout’ of normally dry gully systems which empty storm water into the sea”.
