Climate change impacts

It takes only 138 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Bulgarian will produce over the course of the entire year.  Therefore, May 18th (138 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Bulgaria Day."

With increased fluctuations in air temperature and precipitation rates, climate change is expected to result in an increased risk of warming and drought.

Bulgaria’s Fourth National Communication to the UNFCCC explains that climate scenarios predict “an increase in the occurrence, intensity and level of impact of the soil droughts in Bulgaria for the 21st century an increased risk and vulnerability to soil droughts. The soils with low capacity of moisture preservation and the regions in southeast Bulgaria are most vulnerable to those changes, in which areas precipitations during the warm half-year are low, even at present climatic conditions.”

Story

“Boyan Petrov, is a zoologist from the National Natural History Museum in Sofia, Bulgaria. He is also a mountaineer. As well as witnessing changes in the local climate since his childhood, a recent mountaineering trip to the Himalayas opened his eyes to changes taking place there.”
