Climate change impacts

It takes only 36 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Bamar will produce over the course of the entire year.  Therefore, February 5th (36 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Burma Day."

Burma is already one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to extreme weather events.  In 2008, the destruction from Cyclone Nargis resulted in over 100,000 deaths and left more than 2 million homeless.  These tropical cyclones are predicted to become less frequent, but more intense over the coming decades.

Little is known about the effects of climate change in Burma, partly due to its international isolation.  Infrastructure to reduce the impact of cyclones, like emergency shelters and early warning systems, are not available to many residents.
