Climate change impacts

It takes 267 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Irish will produce over the course of the entire year.  Therefore, September 24th (267 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Ireland Day."

The clearest impact of climate change already occurring in Ireland is temperature increase.  Six of the country’s 10 warmest years have occurred since 1990.  There has also been a recent trend towards more intense and frequent rainfall.  Projected climate change impacts for Ireland include: sea level rise; more intense storms and rainfall events; increased likelihood and magnitude of river and coastal flooding; increased storm surges; water shortages in certain areas; water quality problems; and increased pest populations.

For more information on these climate change impacts, see the Environmental Protection Agency’s report, “The EPA & Climate: Responsibilities, challenges and opportunities”.
