Climate change impacts
It takes only 88 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Macedonian will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, March 29th (88 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Macedonia Day."
Climate change is expected to affect Macedonia in a number of ways. In agriculture, it is expected that “climate change will have a negative impact in almost all important agricultural regions,” affecting vulnerable crops like vines and grapes, tomatoes, winter wheat, apples, and alfalfa. Due to higher temperatures and reduced precipitation, salinization of soil is expected to increase. Soil quality will also be affected by an increase in aridity, leading to loss of organic matter by water and wind erosion. Rising temperatures are also expected to increase the frequency and duration of heat waves.
