Climate change impacts
It takes only 110 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Maltese will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, April 20th (110 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Malta Day."
Across the Mediterranean region, climate change is expected to add to existing environmental problems, such as “desertification, water scarcity and food production, while also introducing new threats to human health, ecosystems and national economies of countries.” Among the climate change impacts expected for Malta are drought, salinization of land, increased risk of forest fires, soil erosion, and a loss of freshwater resources. In Malta, one of the first impacts of climate change is likely to be changes to the water resource system including reductions in water availability.
