Climate change impacts
It takes only 53 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Moldovan will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, April 22nd (53 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Moldova Day."
Moldova has struggled in its transition from a Soviet Republic to an independent state. Poor reforms and policies have left the agricultural industry in decline. In 2007 a catastrophic drought hit the already hurt agricultural industry. There is concern that climate change could increase the frequency of these droughts. Climate change is expected to have a negative impact on production of some crops like wheat, and will certainly have an impact on Moldova's food security.
Water resources will be stressed in the future, and scarcity in some parts of the country will increase. Moldova will also see more extreme weather events in the future.
