Climate change impacts

It takes only 77 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Paraguayan will produce over the course of the entire year.  Therefore, March 18th (77 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Paraguay Day."

Climate change, which has resulted in heavier and more frequent rains in South America, is creating favourable conditions for diseases to spread.  In 2007, Paraguay experienced an outbreak of dengue haemorrhagic fever, with 20,000 cases registered with the authorities.

According to an IPS article, Canada is "the only country in the Americas with no domestic dengue infections."  The article goes on to state that "climate change may enlarge the geographical distribution of diseases like dengue fever, malaria, leishmaniasis or Chagas' disease, and that the breeding season of the vectors that transmit them may be prolonged."
