Climate change impacts
It takes only 125 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Portugueuse will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, May 5th (125 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Portugal Day."
Portugal's Fourth National Communication to the UNFCCC identifies a number of main climate change impacts:
- "probable changes in flood and drought regimes, as well as changes in the quality and availability of water;
- significant increase in the risk of fire hazards;
- considerable increase in air pollution levels and ecological disturbances, which may lead to significant changes in the dynamics of infectious disease transmission as well as regional variations in agricultural productivity;
- increase of the erosion processes and consequently of the flooded areas;
- reduction in the yield of irrigated crops."
Coastal zones, energy, water resources, agriculture and human health will all experience changes due to the change in climates.
