Climate change impacts
It takes only 198 days for the average Canadian to produce as much greenhouse gases as the average Ukrainian will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, June 17th (198 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Ukraine Day."
Ukrainians, particularly in rural communities, are being directly affected by climate change impacts. “These impacts include warmer temperatures, storms, floods, droughts, heat waves, windstorms and forest fires. These extremes have a direct negative impact on local, especially rural, population (losing homes, harvest, etc).”
For example, climate change impacts such as sea level rise have begun in Ukraine along the Black and Azov Seas. Observations indicate that the Black Sea has been rising since 1923, and that "Sea level rise created following vulnerability to the sea coastlines: increased probability of catastrophic floods on some rivers; salinization and bogging of pastures and washing out of beaches; and damage to amenities: communications, municipal buildings and facilities.”
Story
"In Ukraine, an unlikely voice is speaking — and singing — about the need for clean, green, energy.
Ruslana is Ukraine's biggest pop star. Her live shows are spectacles with fire, smoke, dancers and costumes. In the middle of it all, there's Ruslana, tossing her hair, stamping her feet and usually not wearing very much — a small bundle of unbridled energy."
