Climate change impacts
By the end of the day on March 12 the average Canadian will have produced as much greenhouse gases as the average Zambian will produce over the course of the entire year. Therefore, March 12 (71 days into the year) is "Climate Change Impacts in Zambia Day."
While variability is a feature of the Zambian climate, the country's National Adaptation Programme of Action explains how drought, floods, extreme heat, and a shorter rainy season are occurring more often, and with greater intensity in the past 10 years.
Story
"In Liyoyelo village, the Liywalii family has returned after an absence of four months. The floodwater has sloughed away the clay walls of their house waist high, leaving just the bare ribs of reeds and wooden poles. 'In December the rains came very fast. Within 12 hours the whole yard was flooded. This is the first time we have ever seen that,' says Liywalii Liywalii, 29."
